Math and Music

Probably the closest connection between Music and Math is that they both are indicative of patterns. For eg., Fractions are used in music to indicate the lengths of notes. Rhythms too have a pattern, as do melodies and scales.

Fractions can be difficult to learn and comprehend. Music integration, however, helped the students to understand and learn the concept faster and easier.

To understand the concept of division and fraction through a study of musical patterns, therefore, the students explored different elements of music in terms of the whole, half, quarter and eighth notes and also created simple compositions using these notes.

They then filled in a bar of music with different fractional values and clapped as per the bar divisions.
